Aisha Ali is an internationally recognized authority on the dances of Egypt and North Africa. Following her successes in the United States, she performed widely in Europe and the Middle East. For over twenty years she directed her folkloric ensemble, the Aisha Ali Dance Company. In 1971, Aisha traveled to the Middle East to observe firsthand many traditional styles of dance not seen in the United States. She made subsequent visits to Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia from 1973 to 1997 to document folkloric materials that were fast disappearing. As a result, she has released numerous audio and video recordings.
Dahlena's dance teaching methods, professional performances, and artistic attitude toward Middle Eastern dancing have been widely acknowledged from coast to coast during the past thirty years. Although she is an American, her unusual ability to perform the Middle Eastern dance earned her a reputation in many cities. In 1975, Dahlena authored the instruction book THE ART OF BELLY DANCING. She has also produced recordings and numerous videos. She lived and performed in the MIDDLE EAST and parts of Europe, and directed and choreographed for three different dance companies.
Mahmoud Reda developed a special method of teaching Egyptian Folk and Oriental dance (Raks Sharqi) for the purpose of training the Egypt's first theatrical folk dance troupe, "The Reda Troupe"which he formed in 1959. His technique is based on the original folk dance movements that he researched, analyzed and studied from different regions of Egypt.Ê These basics were developed, modified and enriched to suit theatrical production. Ê As a soloist, choreographer and director, Mahmoud Reda made four world tours to 58 countries with his troupe. In addition to hundreds of troupe productions, Mr. Reda has choreographed for Egyptian TV specials, plays and operettas and authored "In the Temple of Dance". He was also principal actor, dancer and choreographer for three popular Egyptian films. Mr. Reda served as the Artistic Advisor to the ministry of Culture in Egypt. He continues to teach through tours where he instructs in the famous "Reda" technique. Ê Mimi Spencer al-Khayyam performed
Middle Eastern music and dance for more than 20 years. She played the
kanun since 1978, and sangs in seven languages. With Vince Delgado and
Devi-ja Delgado, she founded the ensemble Jazayer in 1973, one of the
first American groups (with no member having any ethnic Middle Eastern
ancestry) performing authentic classical, urban and folkloric music
from the Middle East. The group published two LPs, six cassettes and
three compact discs. The author of five books in the field of Middle
Eastern music, Mimi was also the president of Near Eastern Music West,
Inc., a nonprofit educational corporation, and she edited the Near Eastern
Music Calendar, a newsletter of Middle Eastern music events centered
in northern California. In July 2002 she released her first "solo" CD,"
Right Where I Want to Be", of traditional Arabic, Armenian and
Greek music, plus two original compositions.
Morocco (Carolina Varga Dinicu) is considered the leading performer & authority in her field in the U.S., Canada and abroad, evidenced by numerous awards and frequent invitations to teach master seminars and perform in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Australia, Israel, Egypt, England, Morocco, Brazil and Italy as well as the U.S. Research has taken her to Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tadjikistan, Kirghizia, Georgia, Armenia, Greece, Yugoslavia, etc. Ê Morocco continues to perform, teach, research, write and lecture and hopes to keep on "till 6 weeks after I'm dead"... NADIA GAMAL - A LEGEND Nadia Gamal, of Italian and Greek
heritage, found her home in Lebanon. She became an international star
and a dance artist of the highest caliber and dedication.She has influenced
many dancers.
